GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyric acid, is a central nervous system depressant that was used to treat alcoholism, narcolepsy (still used), cataplexy and as an anesthetic agent. It is otherwise and currently used as a doping drug to increase athletic performance, as a date-rape drug, and by bodybuilders to decrease fat and build muscle mass.
GHB has a short elimination half-life of 30-60 minutes. As a result it is expected to be excreted from the body between 2 hours 45 minutes and 5½ hours.
